Sesame breeding program

Sesame is an ancient oilseed crop, often referred to as the “queen of oilseeds,” and offers a highly valuable alternative to increase crop rotation and diversify the cropping agro-system worldwide. It is known as a super-food, and the sesame seeds are rich in essential nutrients, including protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals (such as calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc). Sesame is known for its ability to thrive in hot and arid conditions, making it well-suited for cultivation in regions with limited water resources. Sesame can be grown in diverse soil types, including sandy, loamy, and even moderately saline soils. This adaptability allows farmers to cultivate sesame in a wide range of agro-climatic conditions, further increasing its agricultural significance. Sesame has deep taproots that penetrate the soil, helping to break up compacted soil layers and improve soil structure. Additionally, the residues left after sesame harvest can serve as organic matter, enriching the soil and enhancing its fertility for subsequent crops. Sesame is a valuable cash crop, with demand stemming from various industries, including food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. The high market value of sesame makes it an attractive option for farmers seeking profitable crop choices.

Our innovative breeding program at Hebrew University brings the best cultivars to the market. Integrating cutting-edge technology, machine learning, and computational genomics, we breed for a range of desirable traits to promote the adoption of sesame crops in new areas. Our non-GMO varieties, adapted for mechanical harvest, offer new opportunities for farmers. Integration adaptability to local environmental conditions and changing climate make Our varieties prime seeds for farmers. Our novel herbicide resistance technology opens a new approach to weed control in sesame and dramatically improves yields and profits for farmers.

The varieties developed in our breeding program are commercialized by MaxSum Seeds
The products produced from our varieties are being marketed by Masik-Magal.
